Sixth Generation

94. Siegwart CAHNMANN110 was born on 9 February 1872 in Rheinbischofscheim, Baden, Germany.110 He died on 13 January 1942 at the age of 69 in München, Germany.109,110 From Werner Cahnman's "The Life of Clementine Kraemer," 1963:

The Muenchen Loge had been founded in 1897 by a handful of courageous men who braved the stigma of "Ghettoizers." They emphasized what Jews have in common and thereby intended to bridge the gap between the liberal and orthodox wings of Judaism. Most of the members were men who had migrated to the city from small towns and country places. . . .my grandfather and father, Gustave and Sigwart Cahnmann, were interested in the movement from the start and . . . they joined the lodge formally when they definitely moved to Munich in 1901.

My father came to Munich frequently after 1895. He and my mother . . . became privately engaged in 1897. The formal engagement took place in 1900, the wedding in 1901. From stories told by my father, I know that he was well informed about the preliminaries surrounding the launching of the Muenchen Loge.

My father served on many committees of the Muenchen Loge until he became vice-president and, for two consecutive terms, president in the 1920's. He told me repeatedly in later years that the Kischinev pogroms had stirred him deeply and that he took time off from his business to undertake a speaking tour through some of the South-German lodges, to further the drive for funds which were designed to assist the victims and to integrate them into the existing Jewish communities. Siegwart CAHNMANN and Hedwig SCHUELEIN were married in 1901 in Germany.111 From Werner J. Cahnman, "The Life of Clementine Kraemer", 1963:

The Munich family. . . is described in good humor in a poem which [Clementine Cahnman Kraemer] wrote and recited on the occasion of the betrothal of my parents. The poem. . . bears the date of June 1, 1900. . . Of interest are the allusions to my father's yourthful political "radicalism" and, even more so, to the then revolutionary manner of my parents' engagement: they did it all by themselves, without any pre-arrangement by members of the family!
