32. Alfred BERNSTEIN , Jr.^57,74 was born on 12 October 1929 in Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee, USA. He died on 28 December 2013 at the age of 84 in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.⁷⁴ Alfred E. Bernstein (Al) Age 84 passed away peacefully on December 28, 2013. He was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He attended Christian Brothers High School and graduated from University of Miami after serving in the Air Force.
As a single father of four boys, Al moved to Wisconsin in 1973 to become the first Franchisee dealer for Car-x Auto Services. He was convinced that Madison offered a great future for his new business, his four sons, and himself.
Al immediately fell in love with Madison and soon wanted to give back to the community that had given him so much. He started a racquetball tournament to benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters (WAMBO - We Appreciate Madison Benefit Open) that was held annually for a number of years. He served on the Board of Valley Bank and Bank of Middleton, as well as the board for Ronald McDonald House as it was getting off the ground.
Al loved the Badgers and supported them in many ways, one of which was participation in the Badger Buddy Program. Al's business acumen was based on his love of football and teamwork. He definitely believed in the adage "there's no "I" in team". Whether it was a friend in need or a family member, Al was always there without hesitation to lend a helping hand. He was committed to supporting young adult and children's programs. With Dana lin, his wife of 30 years, Al initiated a scholarship fund which benefited both a UW student and a child from Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Al was a man of grace, passion, dedication, and fairness to family and friends. He loved to travel and got a thrill out of hearing about his kids and grandkids endeavors. He was proud of them all. He was a most dedicated, loving, and appreciative husband.
Al is preceded in death by his mother Dorothy (Dotty), father Alfred and oldest son Michael, Uncle Micky (Edith), Sister-in-law (Maxa dai Frank) and brother-in-law Alfred Frank (Aly).
He is survived by wife, Dana lin, brother Lou (Bette), sons Jeff (Joan), Doug (Susan), Greg (Robin), his 9 grandchildren, Hannah, Alexandra, Gabriella, Jessica, Jeffrey, Maya, Leah, Harris, and Slater; nephews, Ken and Roger and their children. He had a special relationship with Dana lin's niece and nephew Robert Frank (Jeanne) and Lisa dia Jacobs (Steve) and their children.
His family wishes to express their gratitude to his California and Wisconsin doctors and nurses, and the many caregivers who were so kind to him. A special thank you to Agrace caregivers.
Al was so full of life, he showed unbelievable strength for his family and friends throughout his 4-1/2 year struggle with Cancer. He was quite the role model. His doctors referred to him as their "miracle" patient.
It is said you are judged by the footprints you leave behind you in life; Al left large ones in our hearts. He will be missed by so many.
A Celebration of his life will be January 10, 11:00 a.m. at Temple Beth El, 2702 Arbor Drive, Madison. Lunch to follow services. Family and friends welcome.
